About

Bivacco Fiorio sits at 2,810m on the south side of the Monte Rosa massif, in the heart of the Valais Alps. The hut is accessible from Macugnaga (Italy) via the Sella Gnifetti glacier, a 4–5 hour approach that requires basic glacier travel skills and crampons. From the Swiss side, the approach from Saas-Fee is longer and more involved, typically a two-day trip via higher passes. This is serious mountain terrain, not a casual day hike.

The bivacco is a simple stone shelter offering 18 beds in basic dormitory conditions. There's a small kitchen where you prepare your own meals—bring all food and fuel yourself. Water comes from snowmelt (reliable in summer, scarce or absent in autumn). The hut has no electricity or heating beyond body warmth. The building provides essential protection from the elements and serves mountaineers accessing peaks around Monte Rosa, including Punta Giordani and Punta Parrot. Open June to September, depending on snow conditions. In winter it becomes a snow-buried refuge requiring winter mountaineering experience to reach.

Contact the Gressoney-Saint-Jean tourist office or check the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) website for current access conditions and updates. The hut fills quickly during July and August—arrive early in the day or plan flexibility. Bring a bivvy bag or warm sleeping bag; temperatures drop well below freezing most nights. Register your ascent locally before departure.
