Refuge Elena

Rifugio Elena sits at 2,055m on the southern slopes of the Ticino Alps, near the Swiss-Italian border. Most parties approach from Menzonio village (820m), a 4-5 hour hike gaining roughly 1,200m vertically. Trails are well-marked and steadily steep in places, but the route is straightforward and never technical. The hut is a reliable base for day hikes across the Lepontine range or as a night stop on longer traverses linking the central Swiss Alps with the Italian valleys.

The hut sleeps 127 guests in mixed and single-sex dormitories. Evening meals focus on hearty mountain fare—expect pasta, risotto, and local cheeses. Breakfast is substantial. Hot showers are available. The hut operates year-round but is quietest from November to early March; expect reduced services or closure during extended snow periods in winter. Contact ahead if visiting outside peak season. Mobile signal is weak or absent, so pre-arrange any changes before arriving.

Book directly via email or phone for summer months and weekends—July and August fill 4-6 weeks ahead. Shoulder seasons (May-June, September-October) are less pressured but still book at least two weeks out. Groups larger than 10 should contact the hut directly to confirm availability and arrange meals in advance. The hut is popular with Italian and Swiss hikers, so weekend traffic can be significant.
