Refuge Città di Mantova

Rifugio Città di Mantova stands at 3,498m on the Gran Paradiso massif in the Valle d'Aosta. Reach it from Pont in 5–6 hours, climbing steadily through alpine meadows and scree. The hut serves as a base for Gran Paradiso (4,061m) ascents and traverses toward Monte Rosa. Most parties summit Gran Paradiso from here in 4–5 hours and return by early afternoon.

The refuge operates as a full service hut with around 40 bed spaces and a kitchen serving hot meals. Expect basic but solid accommodation: dormitory beds, cold running water, and a small dining area. The hut operates from June through September. Water comes from melt and springs; fuel is carried in. Mobile signal is patchy. Bring a headtorch and layers—nights drop well below freezing even in summer.

Book by calling ahead. July and August weekends fill quickly; reserve 4–6 weeks in advance for these periods. June and September have more availability. Confirm opening dates each year as snow can delay access into late June. The hut is managed locally and prefers direct phone contact over email. Arrive before dark and plan to acclimatize if you're coming from low elevation—3,500m brings real altitude effects. Bring cash; card payments are unreliable at this elevation.
