Refuge Gaspare Oberto - Paolo Maroli

Rifugio Gaspare Oberto – Paolo Maroli sits at 2,796m in the Monte Rosa massif, accessed from Macugnaga in the Valais. The standard approach takes 2.5 to 3 hours from Staffalp (2,051m), following a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through Alpine meadows then rocky terrain. This is a working hut on serious mountain routes, not a destination hut—it serves climbers and ridge walkers tackling the surrounding 4,000m peaks. The location offers direct access to Monte Rosa's east face and the classic high-altitude traverses of the area.

The hut has 24 beds across multiple rooms and provides meals prepared by the custodian. Expect basic dormitory accommodation and simple food—bring layers and be self-sufficient on weather and fitness. The hut typically operates June through September, closing during winter and shoulder seasons. Water comes from the mountain; heating is minimal outside peak season.
