Refuge de Trébentaz

Refuge de Trébentaz sits at 1865m in the Vaud Alps, serving as a base for hikers working the ridges and peaks of this underrated region. Access is straightforward: from Château-d'Oex, follow the hiking trail towards Gumfluh and Pic Chaussy. Count on 2.5 to 3 hours from the village. The refuge lies on established routes connecting the Gastlosen range with higher traverses across to Nyon and beyond. Most hikers approach in summer and autumn when weather permits extended ridge walks.
The refuge has 28 beds split across simple dorms. Hot showers are available—a significant comfort at this elevation. The guardian serves hearty dinners and breakfasts; bring your own lunch or order it the day before. There's no WiFi, so plan accordingly. The hut operates year-round but staffing is reliable only May through September. Outside those months, check ahead. The refuge is not SAC-affiliated, so you're not paying Section dues, but standards remain solid for independent Alpine huts.

July is the busiest month; aim for June or September if you want space and fewer people on the trails. July bookings should go in by mid-May. Phone calls are best made in the evening after 18:00 CET.
