Refuge des Tinderets

Refuge des Tinderets sits at 1491m in the Vaud Alps, on the GR5 long-distance trail between Lac de Joux and the Jura. The hut is a 2-hour walk from either Lac de Joux or the valley. The surrounding terrain offers moderate hiking through mixed forest and alpine meadow, with day trips to higher peaks and ridges above 1800m accessible in 3–4 hours. The GR5 passes directly past the hut, making it ideal for through-hikers breaking a multi-day journey.
The refuge operates as a traditional SAC hut with 41 beds across shared dormitories and 3 private rooms. Staff serve substantial evening meals and breakfasts; packed lunches are available to order. The hut has basic facilities including hot showers and a small bar. It operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions. The setting is quiet and working-oriented rather than resort-style—expect a communal atmosphere with other hikers and trail workers.
Book accommodation by email or phone as soon as you have travel dates confirmed. The hut fills quickly during July, August, and the September school holidays, so contact 8–10 weeks ahead for peak season. Shoulder seasons (June and late August) and weekday visits offer better availability. Credit cards are accepted. The hut is staffed daily during summer; confirm opening dates if traveling outside the main season.
