About

The Dobratsch-Gipfelhaus stands at 2,143 m on the summit of the Dobratsch (Villacher Alpe), the landmark peak that rises west of Villach in the Gailtal Alps of Carinthia. It is the highest point of the massif and a hugely popular day-trip destination, prized for its sweeping panorama over the Julian Alps, the Karawanken and the Gail valley. The hut is owned by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), Sektion Villach, and run by the Fleissner-Rieger family, who have made it known for its warm hospitality and Austrian mountain cuisine. It offers 20 beds in multi-bed rooms plus 12 mattress-camp (dormitory) places. Reaching the summit is unusually easy: the toll Villacher Alpenstraße climbs high onto the mountain, and from the road's upper car parks at Roßtratte or the Aichingerhütte a broad path leads to the top in around 1.5 hours. This makes it a favourite with families and first-time hut-goers, while longer approaches on foot from the valley reward those wanting a full mountain day. The hut is open essentially year-round on a daily, weather-dependent basis.
