Grebenzenhaus

Grebenzenhaus sits at 1,660m on the Grebezen ridge in southern Carinthia, between the Nock Mountains and the Karawanks. Reach it from the village of Eisenkappel-Zellach via the marked trail through beech and spruce forest. The hike takes roughly 3 hours from the trailhead. The hut serves as a junction point for ridge walks toward Hochstuhl (2,237m) to the east and explorations of the lower Karawanks to the south. Winter access is unreliable; confirm conditions before traveling in snow season.
The hut offers 25 beds in simple dormitory rooms and has its own water source. Meals focus on traditional Austrian Alpine fare—expect hearty soups, schnitzel, and local dairy products. Half-board (bed and evening meal) works out cheaper than booking rooms and meals separately. The hut runs year-round but is quieter from November through March. Standard facilities include toilets with running water; there is no shower. The warden can provide route advice for day hikes on the surrounding ridges.
Book by phone or email directly with the hut. July and August fill 4–6 weeks ahead, particularly for weekends. Outside peak season, you can typically get a bed with 1–2 weeks' notice. Confirm your arrival time the day before, as the hut operates on a small staff and needs to prepare meals in advance.
