Zirbitzkogel Schutzhaus

Zirbitzkogel Schutzhaus sits at 2,376m on the Zirbitzkogel in the Gurktaler Alpen range of southern Carinthia. Reach it from the Zirbitzsee car park (1,580m) via the marked trail on the Zirbitzkogel's north face—roughly 3 hours depending on your pace. The hut also connects to longer ridge walks in the Gurktaler Alpen, making it a logical stop on multi-day routes through this less-crowded limestone range.
The OeTK-managed hut sleeps around 35 people across mixed dormitories and a few private rooms. Meals focus on straightforward Alpine fare: the kitchen prepares dinner daily during the season and serves breakfast before dawn starts. Hot drinks and small snacks are available throughout the day. Basic facilities include an outside toilet and water from a mountain spring—this is a working mountain hut, not a hotel. The hut opens mid-June and operates until mid-September, weather dependent.
Book direct by phone well ahead for July and August weekends; June and September typically have capacity. The hut has no email service—calling is the only option. Expect to pay around €12–16 for a bed, €15–20 for dinner, and €7–10 for breakfast. The surrounding peaks and ridges draw serious hikers rather than casual visitors, so you won't find crowds here even in peak season.
