Steinberger Hut

Steinberger Hütte sits at 2,340m in the Kreuzeck massif, reached via the Gail Valley south of Kötschach-Mauthen. From the village of Sankt Daniel, the approach takes 3–3.5 hours on well-marked trail. The hut lies on the main ridge route between Gartnerkofel and Cima di Riofreddo, making it a natural waypoint for multi-day traverses. The southern approach from Italy is steeper and takes 2.5 hours from Sella Nevea. Steinberger Hütte works well as a base for exploring the lower Carnic Alps, where limestone peaks and karst terrain dominate the landscape.
The hut holds 60 guests across rooms with 4–8 beds. Half-board (dinner, bed, breakfast) is standard and fills reliably. The kitchen serves Austrian standards—schnitzel, spätzle, hearty soups. Showers are available for a small charge. The hut operates year-round, though winter access requires mountain skills and avalanche awareness. Phone reception is poor; plan accordingly. The OeAV (Austrian Alpine Club) manages the hut.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer weekends and all of July and August. The hut fills quickly on good-weather weekends. Contact directly by phone (best timing is morning); email responses are slower. Arrive by early afternoon to secure dayroom space and complete check-in before dinner service. Winter visitors should confirm conditions before departure.
