Winterleitenhütte

The Winterleitenhütte sits at 1,849m in the Karawanken range on the Austrian-Slovenian border, near the village of Ferlach in Carinthia. Reach it from the Ferlach area via hiking trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The approach takes 2–2.5 hours on marked paths. The hut sits on a saddle with open views toward both Austria and Slovenia, making it a natural stopover for hikers crossing the range or doing day walks in the region.

The Naturfreunde-managed hut offers around 40 beds in mixed and private rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals and packed lunches; book dinner in advance if you're arriving mid-trip. Water comes from a spring on-site. The hut runs year-round but staffing and facilities vary—confirm opening dates before visiting, especially in shoulder seasons. Basic facilities include a drying room and common space. This is a working mountain hut, not a resort; expect simple, functional accommodation.

Book by phone directly with the hut well ahead for summer weekends and July-August. The Carinthian hiking season runs May through October, with July and August busiest. Winter visits are possible but require checking hut status first—not all staff may be present. The hut works well as a base for exploring the Karawanken and as a waypoint on longer traverse routes through the range.
