Breitenebenalm

Breitenebenalm sits at 1,888m in the Loferer and Leoganger Limestone Alps, south of the Saalfelden basin. Reach it from the village of Saalfelden in about 3 hours on foot, following marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The approach is steady rather than steep, making it accessible for strong day-hikers and a sensible base for multi-day trips across the limestone plateaux. Winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche forecasting.

The alm operates as a working dairy farm and mountain hut combined. It has 30 beds across simple rooms. Meals focus on dairy products and regional specialties—expect fresh milk, cheese, and hearty mountain cooking rather than fine dining. The hut does not offer luxury facilities. Water comes from mountain springs. Toilet and washing arrangements are basic but functional. The hut operates from June through October, depending on weather and snow melt. Outside these months, the alm closes completely.

Book by phone well in advance for July and August. Contact the hut directly for current numbers and availability. Solo walkers and smaller groups often find last-minute space more easily than organized parties. Spring and autumn offer quieter conditions if your schedule allows flexibility. Confirm your arrival time when you book, as the staff manage both farming operations and guest care.
