Karsegg-Heimalm

The Karsegg-Heimalm sits at 1603m on the western slopes above the Salzach valley near Golling an der Salzach. Reach it from the village of Golling by hiking southeast through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The walk takes about 2 hours and gains 800m steadily but without technical difficulty. The hut works as a base for day hikes across the Tennengebirge or as a stop on longer routes through the northern Salzburg limestone ranges.
The hut is a traditional farmstead operating as an alpine inn. It offers simple accommodation in dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare and local dairy products from the working farm—expect schnitzel, bread dumplings, and excellent buttermilk. The hut stays open year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions. Water comes from a spring; toilet facilities are basic but functional.
Book directly by phone or email well ahead for weekends and summer months. July and August fill quickly. The hut is popular with local hikers from Salzburg city, so expect crowds on sunny Saturdays. Winter visits should be arranged in advance to confirm access and staffing. Dormitory beds cost around €25–30 per night; half-board is available.
