Gablonzer Hut

The Gablonzer Hütte sits at 1,522m in the Loferer und Leogantner Steinberge, a limestone massif southeast of Salzburg. Reach it from the village of St. Martin in the Lofer Valley. The standard approach takes 2.5 hours from the valley floor via a well-marked trail that gains 700m steadily through forest and meadow. You can also access it from Schönau an der Königssee (Bavaria) if approaching from the north, though this adds distance. The hut serves as a base for ridge walking and scrambling on the distinctive limestone peaks that dominate this region.

The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and offers 55 beds in mixed and private rooms. The kitchen serves simple mountain food: hearty soups, schnitzel, and traditional Austrian fare. Vegetarian options are available. Water comes from a spring; the hut has basic shower facilities. It operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions—contact ahead if visiting December to March. Mobile signal is unreliable; plan accordingly.

Book directly with the hut from May onwards if you're targeting July and August weekends. Expect crowds on summer Saturdays. The hut fills quickly during school holidays in late July. Mid-week visits in June or September offer more space and quieter surroundings. Contact them by phone or email as early as possible; online booking isn't always available. Groups of 10 or more should book several months ahead.
