Geißeckhütte
2.5About
The hut is run by the Salzburg branch of the Austrian Alpine Club (Oesterreichischer Alpenverein) and holds 85 people across dormitory beds. The guardian serves simple dinners and breakfasts; bring supplies for packed lunches or eat at the hut. Hot showers and dry storage are available. The hut opens mid-May and stays open through September, with limited operations in October. Winter use is possible but depends on snow conditions and advance arrangement with the guardian.
Book ahead from mid-June to August, especially for weekends—6 weeks ahead for July and August. Contact the hut directly by phone or email listed on the OeAV website. The approach from Maria Alm is the main route; descending to Hinterthal (Bischofshofen side) offers a different exit. Expect crowds on sunny weekends. Solo hikers and groups of four or fewer usually find space without extreme advance notice.
