Herbstalm
2.4About
The hut is a working dairy farm that takes hikers year-round. It has 40 beds in simple, clean rooms. Meals are substantial Austrian fare: soups, schnitzel, local cheese, and bread from the valley. Water comes from mountain springs. The bathroom facilities are functional rather than fancy. Electricity is limited. Winter visits require advance warning so they can prepare. The hut sits on the Pinzgauer Spaziergang, a multi-day trail linking huts across the Pinzgau region, so passing walkers use it regularly.
Book directly by email or phone. July and August are busy; reserve at least 4 weeks ahead. September and early October offer better availability and stable weather. Winter walking is possible but marginal—the hut will tell you if the path is passable. Cell reception is patchy, so email works better than trying to call. The hut prefers groups to give notice 2–3 weeks ahead. Expect to pay roughly 25–30 euros per night for bed and breakfast, with evening meals around 12–15 euros.
