Steger Kaserei

Steger Kaserei sits at 1,530m on the Buchberger Wand in the Salzburg Alps, above the village of Werfen. Reach it from Werfen by hiking the Burg Trail for roughly 2.5 hours, or from the Bluntau Valley approach for 3–3.5 hours. The hut works as a base for walks across the limestone plateau, access to the Bluntauer Zinkenkopf (2,191m), and scrambles on the surrounding peaks. The setting is quiet and relatively remote compared to busier Austrian huts.
The hut is small—around 40 beds spread across basic dormitories. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare: they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. A small shop stocks chocolate, nuts, and basic supplies. Water comes from a spring. The hut is open year-round but has reduced capacity and services in winter; confirm availability before heading up. Full facilities include a dining room, drying room for wet gear, and a telephone for emergencies.
Book by phone directly with the hut. Summer weekends and July–August fill quickly, especially mid-week when groups book ahead. Call at least 4–6 weeks before for these periods. Outside school holidays, you'll find space more easily. Half-board (dinner, bed, breakfast) is standard. The hut accepts cash; card payments should be confirmed when you call.
