Mitterfeldalm
4.1About
The Mitterfeldalm is a privately run alpine pasture hut at about 1,690 m on the sunny southern side of the Hochkönig, in the Berchtesgaden Alps of Salzburg. It sits at the foot of the Mandlwände cliffs above Mühlbach am Hochkönig, easily reached from the Arthurhaus car park, and is run by the Holzmann family. Renovated in 2006, it keeps its rustic character and is known for traditional home cooking, some of it from the operators' own farm. Positioned as the last rest stop before the ascent of the Hochkönig, it is a popular base for hikers and climbers heading into the Mandlwände, as well as a relaxed destination in its own right. The very short approach — around 40 minutes on a gentle path from the Arthurhaus — makes it especially family-friendly. Overnight guests are welcome, with about 25 places in simple bunk/dormitory style, and the hut is open through the summer from roughly May to October. Longer approaches climb from Bischofshofen through the Gainfeldtal or from the Werfen side, giving stronger walkers a full day out before reaching the hut's terrace and its wide Hochkönig panorama. It is a genuine working alm rather than an Alpine Club refuge, prized for its authentic mountain hospitality.
