Steinkaralm
2.5About
The hut operates as a working dairy alpery, producing traditional Steinkaralm butter and cheese that you can buy on site. It serves simple food: schnitzel, kasnocken, and bread. The hut accommodates around 40 people across rooms ranging from two to six beds. Showers are basic. It's staffed June to September; outside these months you'll need to arrange visits in advance with the family who manage it. This is genuine alm hospitality, not a tourist operation. Expect an early dinner service and a quiet evening.
Book directly by calling ahead, especially in July and August when families and hiking groups fill the rooms. June and September are less pressured. The hut is remote enough that you won't encounter crowds, but don't expect a walk-in experience in peak season. The setting rewards a longer stay: base here for days on the limestone plateaus above, or combine it with routes to the Großer Loferer (2,105m) or circuits across the Lofer/Leoganger massif.
