Strohlehenalm

Strohlehenalm sits at 1104m in the Salzburg Alps, a working mountain dairy and hut operation above the Saalach valley. Reach it from Unken by hiking 1.5 hours up through mixed forest on well-marked trails, or from the Saalach valley floor via the Weissbach gorge in roughly 2 hours. The approach is moderate and suitable for families, though the final stretch climbs steadily through beech woods.

This is a traditional alpine dairy first and a hut second. You'll find basic refreshments—typically soft drinks, local cheeses, and simple food—but this is not a mountain restaurant with a full kitchen. The alm operates seasonally from late spring through autumn, closing over winter. Sleeping accommodation is very limited; contact ahead if you're hoping for a bed. The real appeal here is the working dairy atmosphere and easy access to surrounding forest trails rather than alpine scrambling or peak-bagging. The location works well as a break point on longer valley hikes or a destination for a morning walk from Unken.
