Gowilalmhütte

Gowilalmhütte sits at 1375m in the Sölktal valley in Styria, deep in the limestone ranges south of Liezen. Reach it from Sölk-Bad by hiking 2.5 hours northeast through mixed forest and meadow. The trail is well-marked and gains 400m steadily. You can also approach from the Sölkpass (1,829m) in roughly 1.5 hours if you're traversing the valley. The hut serves as a base for walking routes across the Sölktal plateau and connects to trails heading toward Stein and the higher passes.
Gowilalmhütte is a small, traditional alpine farm that operates as a simple hut. It offers around 20 beds in basic dormitory-style rooms. Meals are hearty and homemade—expect schnitzel, stews, and local dairy products. The hut has no shower but provides washing facilities. There's a small common room with a stove. It operates year-round but call ahead in winter months as staffing can be irregular. The setting is quiet pastoral rather than high mountain, with views toward the surrounding slopes and forest.
Book direct by phone well ahead for summer weekends and July-August. The hut fills with Austrian families and local hikers rather than international crowds. One-night stays work fine if you're hiking through; multi-night stays work better for exploring the valley floor and gentler ridge routes in the area. Arrive by mid-afternoon if you haven't booked—the kitchen closes early.
