Hengstpasshütte

Hengstpasshütte sits at 987m in the Packalpe region of southern Styria, between Deutsch Goritz and the Hengstpass. Reach it from Deutsch Goritz on the B70: the hiking approach takes 2–2.5 hours via the Packalpe, a steady climb through mixed forest. The hut is accessible year-round by road for those who prefer not to walk in, though the access track can be rough in winter. It's a natural base for exploring the rolling ridges and pastoral slopes of the Packalpe, with onward routes to neighboring peaks and huts in the region.
The Hengstpasshütte is managed as a simple mountain hut by local operators. Capacity runs to around 20–30 guests. Meals are available daily when open, typically featuring regional Styrian cooking: hearty soups, schnitzel, and local cheeses. The hut has basic dormitory-style bedding and a small common room. Water and toilet facilities are standard. Opening season is typically Easter through October, though it may close during wet autumn months—check ahead for shoulder-season visits.
