Almind-Alm

Almind-Alm sits at 1,755m in the Zillertal valley, a working alpine farm that doubles as a simple hut. From Zell am Ziller village, hike northwest on the marked trail toward the Zillergrund; the farm is 4 hours on foot or a steep 5km drive. Most hikers approach from the Zillergrund direction, which cuts the approach to 2.5 hours. The location puts you midway between the Zillertal floor and higher peaks, making it useful for ridge walks and circuits rather than a base for technical climbing.
The hut operates as an Almwirtschaft—they make their own dairy products and serve simple meals based on what's available that day. Beds are basic but warm; they sleep roughly 30 people across small rooms. Water comes from the spring; there's no shower. The kitchen provides traditional Tyrolean food at reasonable prices. Open mid-June to late September, though this depends on weather and staffing; call ahead in shoulder months. The hut closes in winter.
Book directly by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends and July-August. They may turn you away if you arrive without notice during peak season. Payment is cash only. This is a working farm, not a resort hut, so expect basic comfort and limited facilities. Go for the peace and the view down the valley, not the amenities.
