The Kemater Alm is a family-run Alpengasthof (mountain inn) set at around 1,670 m in the quiet Senderstal, a side valley above Grinzens in the western Innsbruck region of Tyrol. It sits beneath the jagged limestone spires of the Kalkkögel, often nicknamed the 'Dolomites of North Tyrol', which makes it a popular base for walkers, climbers and mountain bikers. Since 2019 it has been run by Michael and Kathrin Schaffenrath, who serve hearty Tyrolean food on a sunny terrace with views of the peaks. Despite its 'Alm' name it is a full-service inn rather than an alpine-club hut, and it also offers overnight accommodation as well as space for celebrations and small events. The classic approach is an easy two-hour walk from the Sportcafé car park in Grinzens, following the gravel valley road along the Sendersbach stream through open pasture; the gentle gradient makes it suitable for families and even strollers. Those short on time can drive the Senderstal toll road to a car park close to the hut, or reach it by mountain bike. In winter the same valley road doubles as a popular toboggan run and ski-touring approach. The inn is open through most of the year, typically closing only in the quieter months of May and November, and on Mondays.
