Kemater Alm

The Kemater Alm sits at 1673m in the Zillertal valley of Tyrol. Reach it from Kematen in Zillertal via a hiking trail that takes roughly 2 hours. The approach is steady and well-marked, gaining 700m through mixed forest and Alpine meadow. You can also approach from other trailheads in the valley depending on your route planning.

This is a working Alpine dairy farm that also operates as a hut. It sleeps around 20 guests in simple rooms and dormitory beds. The kitchen serves traditional Tyrolean food—expect hearty fare rather than refined cuisine. They have showers available, which matters on longer hut-to-hut tours. The hut opens seasonally from May through October, with peak season June through September. Staff speak German and basic English. Meals must be ordered when you arrive or book ahead.

Phone the hut directly to book. Call ahead especially for weekends and July–August, when the hut fills with both hikers and day-visitors. Book at least one week ahead during summer. The hut is quieter mid-week and in shoulder months (May, September, early October). They don't take online reservations through major booking platforms, so a phone call is essential. Confirm arrival time when you book since the kitchen operates on a schedule.
