About
Alte Prager Hütte sits at 2,489m in the Zillertal Alps, accessed from the village of Mayrhofen in the Zillertal valley. The standard approach climbs 4–5 hours from the Penken-Alm car park, following marked trails through alpine meadows and scree. The hut lies on the Zillertal High Route, making it a logical stop for multi-day ridge traverses across the region.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and holds around 80 beds across dormitories and a few double rooms. Kitchen staff serve dinner and breakfast; packed lunches are available. The building has running water and composting toilets (no showers). The hut operates year-round, though access via climbing routes closes in winter. Mid-week stays are quieter than weekends. From here you can summit Hochfeiler (3,510m) in 3 hours or continue the ridge walk north toward Greizer Hütte.
Book direct with the hut by phone or email, or through the OeAV website. July and August are fully booked 4–6 weeks ahead. Shoulder season (June, September) offers more flexibility. The hut fills quickly on weekends, so book by Thursday for weekend stays. Most climbers arrive in summer and early autumn when snow clears the approaches. Winter ascents are for experienced mountaineers only.
