About
Schafalm sits at 1,580m on the eastern slopes of the Zillertal valley in Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen by hiking south through Zillertal National Park. The main approach starts at the Stillup valley car park and takes 2 hours on a well-marked trail. Alternative access comes from Ahornbahn cable car at Mayrhofen (save 300m of ascent). The hut works as a base for day walks across the valley or as a waypoint on longer routes into the Zillertal Alps.
Schafalm is a traditional dairy farm that doubles as a mountain refuge. It sleeps around 20 people in dormitory-style rooms and a few doubles. Full-board stays are the norm: expect hearty Alpine fare and fresh dairy products from the hut's own production. The kitchen serves simple lunch options for passing hikers. Water comes from the mountain spring. The hut operates year-round but is quieter in winter—check conditions before arrival. No shower facilities. Basic amenities only, which keeps the atmosphere genuine.
Book accommodation directly with the hut by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August. Weekend availability disappears fast during summer. September and early June are far calmer but still popular with hikers doing valley traverses. The hut accepts cash only. Bring your own sleeping bag even if you take half-board.
