Oberhofer Melkalm

The Oberhofer Melkalm sits at 1,694m in the Zillertal valley near Fügen. Reach it via a steady hiking trail from the village of Fügen—allow 2 hours for the 7km approach through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The route gains 500m steadily but without technical difficulty. From the top of the cable car at Spieljoch (2,040m) you can also descend to the hut in 45 minutes, making it accessible to less experienced hikers.

This is a working dairy farm offering simple accommodation and food rather than a formal Alpine club hut. The Melkalm serves traditional Tyrolean meals including fresh cheeses and milk products made on-site. Bed capacity runs to around 30 people in basic dormitory-style rooms with shared facilities. The hut is family-friendly and busy with day hikers on weekends. Open year-round for day visitors; accommodation available May to October and depending on snow conditions. Hot drinks and light meals serve walkers throughout the day.

Book accommodation directly by phone in advance, especially for weekends and summer months (July–August). The hut operates as a private farm so contact them several weeks ahead rather than expecting the instant availability of larger club huts. Email enquiries may take time to answer; a phone call is more reliable. Access by private vehicle is limited—park in Fügen and walk, or use the Spieljoch cable car.
