Patscherkofel Schutzhaus

Patscherkofel Schutzhaus sits at 1970m on the slopes above Innsbruck. Reach it from the Patscherkofel summit station (accessible by cable car from Vill, south of Innsbruck) in 20 minutes on foot, or hike up from the Vill valley in roughly 2 hours. The direct approach from Innsbruck itself takes 4–5 hours and gains 1400m. Most visitors combine the cable car descent or ascent with a hut visit, making this an easy stop on the Patscherkofel circuit.
The hut is small and simple, run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV), with 20–30 beds in basic dormitory rooms. Meals are straightforward: hearty soups, schnitzels, and alpine cheese dishes. Beds come with blankets but no sheets; bring your own or rent them. The hut has no shower. It opens year-round, though services are reduced November–March. Winter access depends on snow conditions and cable car operation. Water comes from a spring; toilets are outside.
Book direct by phone or email at least 1–2 weeks ahead, especially for weekends June–September. The hut fills quickly on fine weather weekends when the cable car brings day-hikers. Arrive before 5 p.m. to secure a hot meal. Cash payment only. The hut is a working mountain refuge, not a hotel, so expect noise from early starts and communal sleeping arrangements. It's ideal for walkers wanting a proper mountain night without committing to a full multi-day tour.
