Polltalalm

Polltalalm sits at 1,840m in the Zillertal valley, a working alpine farm that doubles as a mountain hut. Reach it from Ginzling (750m) in roughly 2 hours on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through forest then opens to pasture. The hut lies on the main route between the Zillertal and the Zillergrund, making it a natural lunch stop or overnight base for traverses in the area. Most visitors arrive from the Zillertal side; reversing the approach offers an alternative descent route.
Polltalalm operates as a simple hut with around 20 beds in basic dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty mountain fare—expect traditional Austrian dishes rather than gourmet cooking. The farm character is genuine: you'll see cattle on the surrounding pastures and sleep in a working environment. Toilets and washing facilities are functional but minimal. Water comes from the mountain. The hut opens late May through September; check ahead for exact dates as shoulder seasons can be quiet.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email well in advance for July and August weekends. The Polltalalm is popular with families and hiking groups, so summer capacity fills quickly. Weekday visits outside peak season are easier to accommodate. The hut takes groups and can often squeeze in walk-ins on quieter days, but don't rely on this.
