Scheibenschlag-Hochalm

Scheibenschlag-Hochalm sits at 1,640m in the Zillertal, deep in Tyrol's farming country. Reach it from Schwendau in the Zillertal by hiking 2 hours uphill through mixed forest and alpine pasture. The hut lies on the Zillertal Höhenweg, a classic ridge walk that connects this valley to the Ötztal. Most hikers reach it as a day's work from lower villages or as a waypoint on longer traverse routes.

This is a working dairy alm, not a tourist establishment. The hut serves simple meals—schnitzel, gulasch, local cheeses—and stocks beer and soft drinks. Overnight beds number around 20, split between small dormitories and a couple of private rooms. The facilities are basic but clean: cold water, pit toilet, no shower. Kitchen facilities for self-catering exist but are limited. Open June through September, closing when cattle leave the high pastures. Dogs are welcome.

Book directly by phone or email at least a week ahead in July and August. Weekends fill quickly. There is no online booking system. The hut owners speak German and some English. Cash payment only—bring euros. The nearby Zillertaler Höhenweg sees steady weekend traffic, so weekday visits are quieter. Arrive before dark; the final approach is steep and unmarked in places.
