Scheltaualm

Scheltaualm sits at 1,886m in the Zillertal, a long valley that cuts deep into the Zillertal Alps. The hut is a 3-hour walk from Mayrhofen following the Zillertal trail eastward. From the village of Finkenberg (easier approach), it's 2.5 hours via the Wiesental. The route climbs steadily through forest and pasture with no technical difficulty. You can also reach it from Kaltenbach or Stumm depending on your broader trip planning.

The hut operates year-round and has capacity for around 40 guests. It serves simple Austrian hut meals: hearty soups, schnitzel, stews, and local cheese. Half-board is standard. The building is functional rather than luxurious—basic dorm beds and a handful of private rooms. Showers are available. The hut is well-positioned as a staging point for walks deeper into the Zillertal Alps, including routes to the Olperer (3,476m) or multi-day circuits through the high pastures. Most hikers treat it as a comfortable one-night stop.

Book directly by phone or email in advance, especially for weekends in July and August. Mid-week slots in shoulder seasons (June, September) are usually available with a few days' notice. The hut sits on managed pasture with cattle in summer, so expect farm life rather than solitude. Staff speak German and basic English.
