Untere Kälberalm

Untere Kälberalm sits at 1,650m in the Zillertal, easily reached from the village of Mayrhofen. The hut is a 2-hour walk from the Ahornbahn cable car station (1,000m ascent), or 3.5 hours from Mayrhofen itself via the marked trail through the Stilluptal valley. Most hikers combine it with the Obere Kälberalm higher up, making a full day loop of 5–6 hours with considerable elevation gain. The location works well as a mid-route stop on longer Zillertal traverses.

This is a working alpine farm, not a hotel hut. It offers simple but solid accommodation in 25 beds across shared rooms. Meals are hearty—order dinner the night before. The kitchen serves breakfast daily and has a small bar. Toilets and washing facilities are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round, though winter visits need advance notice. The setting is pastoral and quiet; you'll see few crowds here compared to cable-car-accessible huts.

Book directly by telephone well ahead for summer weekends (July–August). The hut manages its own bookings and prefers guests who give 2–3 days' notice. Credit card payment on arrival. Bring cash as a backup. The farmer-operators know the valley intimately and offer good advice on local conditions and route planning. Access is feasible from May through October; winter is possible only in stable snow conditions.
