Vernagthütte
3.4About
The Vernagthütte sits at 2,755 m in the heart of the Ötztal Alps (Ötztaler Alpen), high in the Rofental valley on the Weißkamm ridge between the Guslarferner and Vernagtferner glaciers. First built in 1901, it is owned and run by the Würzburg section of the German Alpine Club (DAV Sektion Würzburg) and is one of the classic high-alpine bases of the range. Because of its glacier setting, it is a prized starting point for glacier ski tours in spring and for summer mountaineering on the many 3,000 m peaks of the Ötztal, including approaches toward the Wildspitze. The hut offers roughly 62 beds in rooms plus about 26 mattress-camp places, and a winter room with around 12 places for out-of-season visitors. It keeps a split season typical of glacier huts: a spring ski-touring period from early March to mid-May and a summer period from early July to mid-September. The usual approach is on foot from the mountain village of Vent (1,896 m) via the Rofenhöfe, a well-marked but long high-alpine hike of about 3.5 to 4 hours. Warm meals and drinks are served when the hut is staffed, and it connects on marked routes to the neighbouring Breslauer Hütte and Hochjoch-Hospiz.

As a glacier hut it has two staffed periods: a spring ski-touring season from early March to mid-May, and a summer season from early July to mid-September. Outside these times a winter room with around 12 places remains available.
The standard approach is on foot from the village of Vent (1,896 m), following the marked trail through the Rofenhöfe up the Rofental. Allow roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.
The approach from Vent is a moderate, well-marked high-alpine hike with a long, steady climb; fit hikers with good footwear manage it, but it is not a short family stroll. Onward tours from the hut cross glaciers and require mountaineering experience and equipment.
When staffed, the hut serves warm meals and drinks and provides overnight accommodation in bedrooms and mattress dormitories, plus a winter room for self-sufficient visitors when the hut is closed.
