About
Biberacher Hütte sits at 1,846m in the Appenzell Alps on the border between Vorarlberg and Sankt Gallen. Reach it from Diepoldsau (Switzerland) or from the Austrian side via Hörbranz. The standard approach takes 2.5 to 3 hours from the valley. Most hikers start from Diepoldsau and ascend through forest and alpine meadow to the hut. The terrain is steady rather than steep—solid hiking boots and basic fitness are enough.
The hut is run by DAV Sektion Biberach and operates year-round except for brief closures in November and May. Capacity is 50 beds in small dormitories and a few doubles. The kitchen serves solid meals: breakfast, lunch snacks, and dinner (three-course set menus). Showers are available. There is no WiFi. The hut sits on good hiking terrain; day walks reach nearby peaks and link to the broader alpine trail network. Views sweep across the Appenzell Alps toward the Säntis massif.
Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for weekends and July–August. Contact the hut directly by email or phone to reserve. If phone lines are busy, email is reliable. The hut fills quickly on summer weekends, especially around local Swiss and Austrian holidays. Outside July and August, booking a week in advance is usually sufficient. Staff speak German and basic English.
