Göppinger Hut

Göppinger Hut sits at 2,245m on the border between Vorarlberg and Graubünden, serving as a basecamp for ridge walks and peaks in the Säntis massif. Most hikers approach from Appenzell in Switzerland via Säntis (2,502m), a 4-hour push that gains 1,600m steadily through open terrain. From the Austrian side, the route from Schäfers takes 3 hours and is less steep, making it the standard approach for those based in Vorarlberg. Both routes are exposed to weather above treeline; bring a map and compass.

The hut manages 72 beds across multiple dormitory rooms and is run by the DAV (Deutscher Alpenverein). Half-board and full-board arrangements are standard. The kitchen handles vegetarian meals reliably. Showers are available—a genuine luxury at this elevation. The hut has no WiFi. It typically opens late May through early October, though this varies with snow conditions. Call ahead before visiting outside peak season. The hut sits on a key col between Austria and Switzerland, making it a strategic stop for multi-day ridge traverses; many hikers use it as a one-night base before pushing to Säntis or continuing eastward.
