Breithornhütte

The Breithornhütte sits at 1,679m in the Vorarlberg Alps, serving the network of trails around the Breithorngruppe. Reach it from Bezau in the Bregenzerwald via the village of Mellau. The approach takes 2.5 hours on marked paths through forest and meadow, gaining 800m steadily. This is a straightforward summer route—no technical sections, but the elevation gain demands steady pace. The hut sits on the main hiking axis between Mellau and the higher passes leading toward the Appenzell Alps.

The hut operates year-round and offers 40–50 beds in mixed dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals are standard Austrian Alpine fare: hearty evening menus and packed lunches on request. Water and power are reliable. The guardians cook hot meals daily during the main season and weekends in shoulder months. Expect basic but clean facilities—this is a working mountain hut, not a resort. The location makes it popular for day-walkers from Bezau as much as for multi-day treks, so plan accordingly.
