Freiburger Hut

Freiburger Hütte sits at 1931m in the Appenzell Alps, above the Säntis region in eastern Vorarlberg. Reach it from Appenzell (Switzerland) or from the Austrian side via Wasserauen. Most hikers approach from Säntis via the ridge traverse—roughly 3 hours from the summit. The hut works as a base for ridge walks and accents of Säntis (2502m), or as a waypoint on longer Alpine Club routes through the Appenzell Alps.
The hut is run by DAV Sektion Freiburg-Breisgau and holds around 50 beds in mixed and family rooms. Meals are hearty: expect alpine classics like Käsespätzle and Kaiserschmarrn. The hut has showers, which matters on multi-day traverses. There's no WiFi. Staff speak German primarily; English is spoken but not guaranteed. Open May to November. Half-board (bed, breakfast, dinner) is standard; packed lunches available.
Book directly by phone or email at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. July Saturdays fill first. The hut accepts both cash and card. The DAV/ÖeAV reciprocal membership system applies—DAV and Austrian Alpine Club members get discounts on accommodation.
