Frödischbödenhütte

Frödischbödenhütte sits at 1,123m in the Appenzell Alps, on the border between Vorarlberg and northeastern Switzerland. Reach it from Dornbirn via the Ebnit road, then a 1.5-hour walk through mixed forest. The trail is well-marked but steep in places. Most hikers approach from the Swiss side via the Säntis massif, which offers more dramatic alpine terrain and better views. The hut sits on a working dairy farm, so expect cowbells and pastoral surroundings rather than high-altitude remoteness.
The OeAV-affiliated hut has 50 beds in dormitories and private rooms. Meals feature hearty Austrian and Vorarlberg cuisine, with emphasis on local dairy products. The kitchen serves hot food for lunch and dinner; book meals when you reserve. Water comes from a spring on the property. The hut operates year-round but is busiest on weekends and during school holidays. Winter access requires good conditions; ring ahead before January or February trips.
Book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends, earlier for July–August. Contact the hut directly by phone or email. The manager is a local farmer who speaks German and basic English. Payment is cash or bank transfer; they do not accept cards. Expect simple but solid hospitality and straightforward mountain fare. The hut makes a good base for walking loops through the Säntis region rather than a destination hut for serious mountaineers.
