Meßstetter Hut

Meßstetter Hütte sits at 2,250m on the Schesaplana massif in the Appenzell Alps, the easternmost range of the Northern Limestone Alps. Reach it from Feldkirch via the Nenzinger Himmel gorge and Gamperdona alp in 3.5 hours. The approach is steep but straightforward. Most climbers use this hut as a base for the Schesaplana ascent (2,964m), which takes 1.5 hours from the hut and involves some scrambling on exposed terrain. Winter access is feasible but depends on snow conditions.
The hut is run by the Vorarlberg Section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and provides 45 beds in dormitories. Meals are available on request—order dinner the night before. The kitchen serves simple Alpine food. Showers and toilets are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round, though services are minimal in winter months. Water and firewood are sourced locally. The atmosphere is working-hut functional rather than tourist-focused.
