Otto Eisenkolb Hut

Otto Eisenkolb Hütte sits at 2,238m on the Hochhäderich plateau in the Appenzell Alps, in eastern Vorarlberg near the Appenzell-St Gallen border. Approach from Säntis via the Schäfler-Alp (4–5 hours) or from the Appenzell side via Sämtis (3.5–4 hours). Both routes are straightforward alpine paths with sustained elevation gain. Most hikers arrive in 4–5 hours from the valley floor.
The hut operates year-round and sleeps around 40 guests across mixed and private rooms. The OeAV-managed refuge serves hot meals for dinner and breakfast, with a good selection of drinks. There's no shower, but running water is available. The simple, functional interior suits hikers on multi-day routes crossing the Appenzell Alps. Mobile reception is unreliable. Winter access requires mountain fitness and experience; the hut operates with reduced services November–March.
Book directly by phone or email at least 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Late spring and early autumn (May–June, September–early October) are quieter and offer reliable weather for ridge walks to Säntis or loops toward the Hochalp. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and around peak Alpine season. Arrive early in the day if you haven't pre-booked, though no guarantee of space exists during busy periods.
