Waltenbergerhaus

Waltenbergerhaus sits at 2,084m on the Säntis massif in eastern Vorarlberg, on the border between Austria and Switzerland. Reach it from Appenzell (Switzerland) via the Säntiser Alp in 2.5 hours, or from Wasserauen in 3 hours. Most hikers approach from the Austrian side via Eggerstanden in roughly 2.5 hours. The route is well-marked and suitable for fit hikers without scrambling experience.

The DAV Sektion Allgäu-Immenstadt operates this 60-bed hut year-round. Expect solid food at reasonable prices—the kitchen serves hot meals at dinner and breakfast daily. Dorm beds dominate, with a few double rooms available. The hut has no WiFi. Water comes from a spring; there's a basic drying room for wet gear. The position on the ridge makes it a natural base for ridge walking toward Säntis (2,502m, 1.5 hours) or traverses across the Appenzell Alps.

Book directly by phone or email. Peak season is July and August; book 6–8 weeks ahead for these months. June and September fill quickly too. Winter booking depends on snow conditions and requires confirmation with the hut. Half-board is standard (bed, dinner, breakfast). Bring cash—the hut accepts it, though card payment is increasingly possible; check when booking. The Säntis area draws Swiss and Austrian day hikers, so weekends are busier than weekdays.
