About

The Mindelheimer Hütte lies at around 2,058 m in the Allgäu Alps, perched on the ridge above the Kleinwalsertal (Vorarlberg) right on the German–Austrian border. Built in 1920 and owned by the DAV Sektion Mindelheim, it is best known as the base for the Mindelheimer Klettersteig, one of the oldest via ferratas in the Allgäu, which links the three Schafalpenköpfe. It is a busy hub for hikers and climbers and offers about 120 places in dormitory-style sleeping quarters plus a small winter room. The managed season runs from early June to early October. Several approaches lead up to it: from the Kleinwalsertal the usual routes start at the Fellhornbahn or the Schwendle car park in the Wildental, climbing via the Kühgund or over the cable-secured Kemptner Scharte in around 2–3 hours, while further options come up from Mittelberg, the Gemsteltal and the Rappenalptal. The surroundings offer rock climbing, high-alpine tours and wide Allgäu views. Meals and drinks are served through the day, and overnight guests should reserve in advance through the hut's website. Oberstdorf is the nearest rail hub.
