Refuge de la Barillette sits at 1162m in the Chaîne des Aravis, between the Vallée de Thônes and the Vallée de l'Arve. The hut lies on the GR96 and makes a natural stop on routes crossing the range. Approach from the Thônes side (2.5 hours) or from Col de la Forclaz de Montmin (1.5 hours). The hut is accessible year-round by car via the valley, making it useful for walkers looking to break up a multi-day traverse without full mountain commitment.
The refuge offers 40 beds in shared dormitories and runs a restaurant serving hot meals. Expect simple mountain food—soups, cheese-based dishes, local charcuterie—rather than fine dining. The hut has running water and basic toilet facilities. Winter opening depends on snow access and staff availability; contact ahead if planning an off-season visit. The location works well for families and groups doing day walks in the Aravis, not just through-hikers.
