Berghütte Hornklause

The Hornklause sits at 1070m in the Allgäu Alps near Oberstdorf. Most hikers reach it from the town of Bad Hindelang via the Öschinental valley—a straightforward 2–3 hour walk on marked trail. The hut works equally well as a base for day hikes into the surrounding limestone peaks or as a stop on longer ridge traverses connecting the Allgäu to the Lechtaler. Steep terrain and exposed sections mean sure-footedness matters, but the trail itself doesn't require technical climbing.

The hut accommodates 16 people in small dormitory rooms. Meals are simple and hearty—expect soup, schnitzel, and Spätzle rather than haute cuisine. The Hornklause is DAV-affiliated, so guest rooms often fill with club members on weekends. Water comes from a spring on the property. The hut opens year-round, though winter access depends entirely on snow conditions; call ahead before December visits. Mobile signal is unreliable at the hut, so plan accordingly.

Book directly with the warden—numbers are easiest to find through the DAV website or the official Allgäu Hiking Maps. July and August weekends fill 4–8 weeks ahead. Winter visits should be confirmed 2–3 weeks before arrival. The hut is family-friendly, with smaller portions available for children and a calm atmosphere that suits families looking to avoid the overcrowded Bavarian chain huts. Winter ascents require winter gear and experience.
