Moosalm

The Moosalm sits at 1,640m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, above the Königssee valley. Most hikers reach it in 2.5 to 3 hours from the village of Schönau am Königssee via the Moosbach valley trail, a steady climb through beech forest that opens onto alpine meadow in the final kilometer. The trail is well-marked and suitable for fit hikers carrying a day pack. Winter access is unreliable above 1,200m.
The Moosalm is a working dairy farm and DAV hut with 50 bed spaces in simple rooms. Breakfast and packed lunches are available; the kitchen serves hearty evening meals using local beef and dairy products. Hot showers are available. The hut opens from May through October, with reduced winter weekends depending on snow. Cell reception is poor; bring a paper map. The surrounding meadows offer short walks to viewpoints over the Königssee and routes onward to higher peaks like the Hochkalter (2,607m).
Book directly with the hut by telephone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Single night stays are often possible midweek during shoulder seasons. The hut fills quickly on Saturdays; Friday arrivals have better availability. Bring cash—card payments are sometimes unreliable at this elevation.
