Neue Traunsteiner Hut

Neue Traunsteiner Hütte sits at 1,560m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, well positioned for day hikes across the region's limestone ridges. Reach the hut from Saccherhäusl (1,120m) in roughly 2.5 hours on steady trail. The Hüttensteig approach climbs consistently but rewards you with views toward the Chiemgau. Other approaches exist from the Hallthurm area if you're combining routes. The hut works as a base camp for traverses toward Schönfeldersteig or loops back across higher ground.

The DAV-run hut has capacity for around 60 guests across shared and small private rooms. Half-board includes dinner and breakfast; half-pension (Halbpension) is the standard booking. The kitchen serves hearty Bavarian fare. Showers are available, though hot water relies on the hut's supply. There's no mobile signal and no WiFi—expect silence. The hut opens spring through autumn, roughly May to October, depending on snow melt and weather.
