Ostermaisalm

Ostermaisalm sits at 1380m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a working dairy farm that doubles as a mountain hut. Reach it from Schönau am Königssee via the Königssee valley, a straightforward 2.5-hour hike through beech forest. The route is well-marked and gains 500m steadily. From Ostermaisalm you can continue higher to Archenkanzel (1681m) or push toward Funtensee on longer days.
The hut serves hearty Bavarian food, focusing on locally-sourced ingredients and dairy from the farm itself. They offer 20 beds in simple rooms. Breakfast and dinner are available; book meals when you reserve. Water comes from the spring. The hut operates year-round but closes in November for annual maintenance. Spring and early summer see snow higher up, so check conditions in May. In summer, the Königssee valley fills with day-hikers, but Ostermaisalm itself stays quieter than huts on busier routes.
Book direct by phone or email at least two weeks ahead. July and August fill fast—aim for six weeks' notice during these months. The family running the hut prefers calls to email; they speak English. Half-board is standard. No SAC reciprocal discounts available here as it's independent, not DAV-affiliated.
