Ostwandlager

Ostwandlager sits at 623m on the eastern flank of the Hochkalter massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps. Reach it from Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden village by hiking south up the Wimbach valley—allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the 7km approach. The hut works as a base for climbs on Hochkalter's east face and for ridge traverses across the Reiter Alm plateau. Day hikers use it for loops through beech and spruce forest and access to the lower alpine meadows.
The DAV Sektion Berchtesgaden operates this simple mountain lodge with 40 beds split between dormitories and a few doubles. Half-board is standard (dinner, bed, breakfast). The kitchen serves solid Bavarian fare—Kasnocken, Schweinbraten, vegetable-heavy sides. No showers onsite, but you can wash at the basin. The hut opens year-round except for maintenance breaks in November and early May. Winter access requires good snow sense; check conditions with the warden before arrival. The atmosphere is working-hut, not resort: expect climbers gearing up at dawn and hikers in muddy boots.
