Eckbauer

The Eckbauer sits at 1,238m on the northern slopes of the Wetterstein, above the village of Mittenwald in Bavaria. Reach it from Mittenwald's town center in 1.5 to 2 hours via the Leutaschklamm gorge trail, a steep but well-marked path that gains 600m. Most hikers continue past the hut toward the Wetterstein's higher peaks—the route to Wetterspitze (2,344m) takes another 2 hours from here. In winter, the approach becomes technical and requires proper equipment; summer offers the straightforward hiking option.

The hut operates as a simple mountain shelter run by the Mittenwald Alpine Club section of the DAV. It has space for around 30 people across dormitory beds and a small number of private rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals and drinks; bring cash, as card payments may not always be available. Water comes from a spring near the hut. The building stays open year-round, though staffing varies seasonally—check ahead for winter weekends and weekday availability. Expect basic Alpine hut standards: cold water washing facilities and pit toilets. The atmosphere is working mountaineer rather than tourist-oriented.

Book directly with the hut by phone before arriving, especially for weekends and July to August. Weekend capacity fills quickly; midweek visits generally have availability. Winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk—contact the hut or Mittenwald's mountain guide service before planning a winter ascent. The hut serves primarily as a staging point for Wetterstein climbers rather than a destination in itself.
