Refuge Alpe Baranca

Rifugio Alpe Baranca sits at 1600m in the Piedmont Alps, on the Alpe Baranca plateau. The hut is reached from the village of Macugnaga in the Valle Anzasca, about 2.5 hours on foot via established trails. Most hikers approach from Pecetto or Frua, gaining roughly 600m elevation. The location works as a base for day walks across the high pastures and ridge traverses toward Monte Rosa's foothills.

The rifugio is a working mountain hut with around 30 beds in shared rooms. Half-board is standard: dinner and breakfast included. The kitchen serves straightforward mountain food—polenta, risotto, local cheeses. There's a small bar. Facilities include basic washrooms and outdoor toilets; bring a headtorch. The hut operates year-round but staffing is minimal October through April. Winter access requires snow-walking experience and independent provisioning.

Book by email or phone directly with the rifugio. July and August fill 4–6 weeks ahead. June, September, and early October are quieter and often have space 2–3 weeks out. Weekends year-round are busier than weekdays. Confirm opening dates before visiting in shoulder seasons. Half-board is mandatory when the hut is staffed; payment is typically cash only.
